Talk and Text

GXR A12-M, f1.4, 1/125, ISO 1181, RAW, 53mm (Voigtlander Nokton f1.2 35mm)

As you can see this is not one of my lunchtime pictures but has been taken after work while waiting for a friend. And after a busy day in the office it's great to switch off while taking some pictures on the way to get some wine an dinner.

While the Nokton lens is really big and heavy it is nice to know that I can use it at any time of day and in any light, I never need to worry about not being able to take pictures due to the lens or the camera.

  1. Cristian,

I have wondered how you manage carrying around the GXR and that big lens. OK on a photographic outing where you can carry a bag, but for lunch hour and the journey home it seems way too big. The GRD was the business.

I now use an Oly E-P1 + Panasonic 14-42 PZ for carrying in a jacket pocket. This is about the same size as you had with the GF-1 + 20mm.

    How do you do it?

  2. Thanks for your comment Peter and very good question.

I always have a small leather messenger bag with me when out and about (even during lunch or anytime I am out), I carry in there my GXR with some spare batteries and SD card, my Nexus 7 tablet, an umbrella (I live in London afterall :) ) and some other stuff as needed. It's all small and light enough to carry around.
At times when I want to travel really light I take one of the GRDs with me and put the Nexus 7 in my jacket pocket or take the GXR with the GR lens in a jacket pocket.
The GXR with the Nokton lens technically fits in my jacket pockets fine but is just too heavy and drags the pockets down.

Maybe I should do a 'What's in my bag' post. :)

  3. I find that for street photography using a bag makes it just too slow on the draw.
The PEN + 14-42PZ weighs 500g, OK in an outdoor jacket but clumsy in a suit or light jacket. Here in the North of England we usually need an outer jacket!

I am thinking long and hard about getting a Sony RX100, only 240g and even smaller than the Ricoh GX100 that I used to have. Supposed to be excellent image quality but lacks the excellent Ricoh UI and no provision for EVF and no step zoom, all features I liked on the Ricoh.

A what’s in my bag post would be interesting especially if a number of readers responded with theirs.

  4. For me, I only use the bag to carry the camera and store it when I am not out, as soon as I step out the door I have the camera in my hand and turned on. This way it's always ready to take a picture.

I was also looking at the RX100 as a compact camera for when I want to travel light or only have a suit on and have to go to meetings. I hope Ricoh will release something equivalent to the RX100 but with their interface.

I will look at having a bag post and see if I can include other people's pictures or link to them.
